Ratatan's launch cross-play leaves PS5 out of the shared pool. If your friends are split across consoles, that's a more useful thing to know before buying than another release-date reminder. This week's smaller games offer very different kinds of evenings: online rhythm battles, a phone-powered party, or a quiet bakery adventure.
The decision comes down to who you want to play with and what everyone owns. Here's the practical check before you turn a promising release into a group purchase. Release listings and multiplayer details were checked on October 14, 2026, at 8:33 a.m. PT; dates below aren't promises of identical unlock hours worldwide.
Ratatan needs a platform agreement
The official full-release FAQ confirms cross-play between Steam, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S. PS5 support is planned for later; Niche Gamer's report corroborates the same limitation. Don't organize a mixed PlayStation-and-Xbox session around an update that hasn't arrived.
Also separate playing together from moving your own progress. The FAQ says saves don't transfer between platforms. Buying a second version therefore isn't a painless way to bring your existing character to a different group.
The PS5 listing describes rhythm-driven action and online co-op, while listing one local player. The FAQ explicitly rules out local co-op on one system. For a group gathered around one television, that changes the shopping decision immediately.
Jackbox is the shared-screen option
The Jackbox Party Pack 12 is scheduled for October 15, according to its publisher's launch announcement and Xbox Wire's release calendar. The latter confirms that only one person needs to own it and players use phones as controllers; the publisher's how-to-play guide explains that arrangement.
Pick the host first rather than asking everyone to buy a copy. Then count the people actually coming. The announcement's broad two-to-eight-player description shouldn't be read as a promise that every included game works for two: the individual game listings give three-player minimums for We Forgot a Card, MegaPals and Hyperface.
For a couple, that means checking the specific game before planning the evening around it. For a larger gathering, the mix of greeting-card jokes, photo editing and debate offers different ways to participate without making controller familiarity the entry requirement.
A solo plan counts too
The Witch's Bakery is dated October 14 in both Nintendo's listing and Game Informer's game page. Both identify it as single-player. Its witch-baker premise makes it the alternative here for someone who wants their evening to start without assembling a party.
The PlayStation release highlights also put it and Ratatan on October 14 for PS5. Check the listing for your actual platform and region before making plans around a calendar date.
| Calendar date | Release or milestone | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| October 14 | Ratatan: US PlayStation and Xbox schedules | Agree on platforms; PS5 cross-play is still pending |
| October 14 | The Witch's Bakery: digital release listings | Plan for one player, not a co-op session |
| October 15 | The Jackbox Party Pack 12 | Choose one host and check each game's minimum player count |
| No firm date verified | Ratatan PS5 cross-play update | Wait for confirmation before buying for a mixed-platform group |
Ask the group what they own before sending a purchase link. If the plan depends on a future update, wait; if nobody can make it, choose something you'll enjoy alone.
