Gears of War: E-Day’s early-access gate opens tomorrow. Xbox’s store page and The Coalition’s editions post both put Premium Edition play at 8am Pacific on October 1, with the worldwide launch and Game Pass day-one window following on October 6. That five-day gap is the whole decision for most Xbox and PC players right now.
Yesterday’s Game Pass leaving list already flagged E-Day on the calendar. This piece is the access-path guide those roundups skip: what Premium actually buys, what Game Pass still covers, and who should spend the extra money before the clock hits October 1.
The five days that matter

| Date / time (Pacific) | What unlocks | Who gets in |
|---|---|---|
| Already live | Pre-install on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox app on PC, and Steam | Anyone who pre-ordered or owns an edition that includes the base game |
| Wednesday, Oct 1, 8am PT | Up to five days of early access | Premium Edition, Premium Upgrade, and Collector’s Edition owners |
| Monday, Oct 6, 8am PT | Worldwide launch; day-one Game Pass | Standard Edition owners, Game Pass Ultimate, and PC Game Pass |
If you only care about playing on day one without buying the game, Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass on October 6 is still the cleanest path. The Premium clock is only worth watching if you want those five days, or the cosmetics and Iron that ride with them.
Edition matrix from the official pages

| Path | Price (USD) | Play starts | What you keep after Oct 6 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Ultimate / PC Game Pass | Subscription | Oct 6 | Access while subscribed; not a permanent license |
| Standard Edition | $69.99 | Oct 6 | Owns the base game; Xbox Play Anywhere across console and PC when bought through Xbox |
| Premium Edition | $99.99 | Oct 1 | Base game + early access + Bravo Squad weapons + five seasonal packs (Emergence first) + 1,000 Iron |
| Premium Upgrade | $30 | Oct 1 | Adds Premium extras if you already own Standard or play via Game Pass (base game or Ultimate required) |
| Collector’s Edition | Limited physical bundle | Oct 1 | Premium digital upgrade plus statue, COG tags, SteelBook, and other physical items; Xbox disc or Steam code by platform |
The $30 Premium Upgrade is the quiet lever most subscribers miss. Xbox’s FAQ says Game Pass members can buy that upgrade for early access and the Premium extras without purchasing a second copy of the base game. That turns the choice into “pay $30 for five days and cosmetics” versus “wait until October 6 for free on Ultimate,” not a forced $99.99 repurchase.
Owner verdict before October 1
| You are… | Best path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| On Game Pass Ultimate and can wait five days | Stay on Ultimate; skip Premium | Day-one access on Oct 6 is already included; $30 only buys calendar time and extras |
| On Ultimate and want weekend co-op before launch week | Buy the $30 Premium Upgrade | Official path for early access without rebuying the base game |
| Planning to own E-Day forever, not just subscribe | Standard now, or Premium if early access matters | Ownership plus Play Anywhere; upgrade later if you change your mind about Oct 1 |
| Collector who wants the physical bundle | Collector’s Edition while stock lasts | Includes Premium digital upgrade and Oct 1 access; quantities are limited per The Coalition |
| Only playing Versus / Horde later with friends on Game Pass | Wait for Oct 6 | Multiplayer modes fill after launch anyway; five days alone is a thin reason to upgrade |
Pre-install is already open, so the practical move tonight is simpler than the marketing stack suggests. Confirm which license you will use on October 1 or October 6, download while the house is quiet, and only open your wallet if those five early days or the Premium pack contents are worth $30 to you. Everyone else can let Game Pass do the heavy lifting next Monday.
