GTA 6 Pre-Order Split: What The Verge, Xbox, and Sensor Tower Actually Say

Grand Theft Auto VI is still nearly two months from its November 19 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but the pre-order conversation has already turned into a platform scoreboard. Over the past two days, The Verge’s reporting that early orders are “heavily skewed” toward PS5 collided with an unusually public reply from Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball, while older Sensor Tower estimates still supply the only percentage split in wide circulation. The useful work is separating what each source actually claimed from the headlines built around them.

None of the parties that matter most, Rockstar, Take-Two, Sony, or Microsoft, have published an official console-by-console pre-order tally. Everything below is therefore a comparison of public statements and third-party modeling, not a sales audit.

Three claims, three different levels of detail

Tom Warren’s Verge piece, summarized by Push Square and GamesRadar on September 25, said Xbox sources described GTA 6 pre-orders as heavily skewed toward PS5 and treated that as another worry for the platform. Warren did not publish a percentage, a unit count, or a dollar figure. The report sits inside a broader Xbox restructuring story rather than a dedicated sales brief.

Ball answered on X the same day the coverage landed. He said Xbox is “very happy” with GTA VI pre-orders, that the title is “breaking records for Xbox,” that more records are expected through the fall, and that “our internal analysis shows our share of pre-orders to be matching our share of the console market.” He released no numbers of his own. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella’s public reply, quoted by GamesRadar, was blunt about the framing: given Xbox’s current console share, matching that share is not a boast on its own.

The only widely cited split with percentages still comes from Sensor Tower’s mid-August tracker, covered by Destructoid on August 18. That model put about 77 percent of tracked pre-orders on PS5 and 23 percent on Xbox, from roughly 4.38 million copies overall (about 3.38 million on PlayStation). Destructoid also relayed Sensor Tower’s note that around 90 percent of those pre-orders were for the $100 Ultimate Edition rather than the $80 Standard Edition. Those figures are estimates with a mid-August timestamp, not Rockstar’s books, and they predate the late-August Extended Look showcase.

Install-base math vs a 77/23 split

Push Square’s summary of the Verge scoop used a rough install-base frame that many readers already assume: PS5 approaching 100 million units sold and Xbox Series X|S around an estimated 35 million. Those are round journalist figures, not a Circana table, but they are useful for a sanity check. A 100-to-35 hardware ratio is about 74 percent PlayStation / 26 percent Xbox of that two-platform pool. Sensor Tower’s 77/23 pre-order estimate sits close to that line, not wildly above it.

That is the hinge of Ball’s reply. If Xbox’s share of GTA 6 pre-orders roughly matches its share of the console market, a PS5-heavy absolute total is exactly what the installed bases predict. “Heavily skewed” can still be true in raw copies while also being unsurprising once you normalize for how many machines are in living rooms. The Verge’s unnamed sources may be describing something worse than market share; Ball is saying Xbox’s internal view is that it is not. Without Rockstar’s ledger, both statements can coexist in public because they answer different questions.

What is locked on the store pages

The soft claims sit on top of harder store facts. Xbox’s Grand Theft Auto VI page lists the November 19, 2026 release on Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar and retailer listings have held Standard and Ultimate at $79.99 / $99.99. PlayStation Blog’s September 3 DualSense reveal adds a hardware layer timed to the same launch: Grand Theft Auto VI Black and White Limited Edition DualSense controllers at $84.99 / €84.99 / £74.99 / ¥12,480, with pre-orders from September 10 and shelf availability starting November 19. The Black edition is Direct-first where PlayStation Direct operates; the White edition is broader retail.

The plain verdict is narrower than the argument online. Absolute PS5 leadership in GTA 6 pre-orders is the expected outcome of a much larger PlayStation install base. Sensor Tower’s August model roughly tracks that expectation. Xbox’s public position is that its relative share is healthy even if the raw copies are smaller. Until Rockstar or Take-Two publish a platform breakout, treating any single percentage as settled fact is the mistake. For players, the calendar that still matters is November 19, and if you want the Vice City DualSense, the limited pad run that PlayStation already priced and dated.
