Japan's Midnight Black PS5 is cheap — if you can use it

Sony's new Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition is ¥55,000 tax-in in Japan — about $347 at mid-October 2026 rates — and it only works if the console language is Japanese and the PlayStation account's country/region is set to Japan. Preorders open Oct 20 at Japanese PlayStation retailers and EC sites; the console and a matching Midnight Black disc drive both launch Nov 19, 2026, the same day Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to arrive. Facts below were checked against Sony's Japan PlayStation Blog, Sony DigitalPR, PlayStation Japan's buy page, Gematsu, and PlayStation Direct US listings on Oct 13, 2026, at 3:17 p.m. PT.

Who this SKU is actually for

Buyer Midnight Black Japan Digital (CFI-2200B02S)
Lives in Japan, Japanese UI, Japan PSN account Fits — this is the intended customer
Outside Japan, wants a black digital PS5 for a local account No — language + Japan-region account required
Importer planning to flip region or language after unboxing No — Sony markets it as Japan-use only, same rules as the existing Japanese-only Digital Edition
Wants physical discs on day one Buy the matching drive (¥11,980) or stay on a disc-capable global SKU
US shopper comparing sticker prices only The yen MSRP looks cheap; the locks and 100 V power rating are the real cost

Sony's wording is blunt: the console is limited to use in Japan, the system language is Japanese only, and it works only with a PlayStation account whose country/region is Japan. That is the same restriction class as the white Japanese-only Digital Edition already on sale — Midnight Black is a color pass, not a region unlock.

Price math: Japan vs US Direct

Item Japan MSRP (tax-in) Approx. USD (¥1 ≈ $0.00631, Oct 12–13 rate) US PlayStation Direct
Digital Edition console ¥55,000 ~$347 $599 (825 GB Digital)
Standalone disc drive ¥11,980 (Midnight Black, CFI-ZDD1J01) ~$76 $79 (white drive listing)
Console + drive ¥66,980 ~$422 $678

On MSRP alone, the Japan digital box undercuts US Direct by roughly $250, and a Japan digital-plus-drive stack still sits about $250 under the US pair. That gap is why gray-market listings will show up — and why the account lock matters more than the paint. The Japan model also lists 100 V power input; US outlets are 120 V. Do not treat a cheap imported chassis as a drop-in US living-room console.

Timeline and what ships in the box

Date What happens
Oct 20, 2026 Preorders start at Japanese PlayStation stores and EC sites
Nov 19, 2026 Console + Midnight Black disc drive launch; GTA VI also due that day
Through Mar 31, 2027 Purchase can qualify for Sony's Japan campaign that extends the usual 1-year warranty to 2 years (registration required)

In the box: the Midnight Black Digital Edition (825 GB SSD), one DualSense, horizontal feet, HDMI cable, power cord, USB cable, printed materials, and ASTRO's PLAYROOM. The vertical stand is sold separately. Attach the optional disc drive if you want package games; pairing still needs an internet connection, per Sony.

Why most importers should skip it

A US (or other non-Japan) account cannot satisfy the Japan country/region rule Sony spells out for this SKU. Buying through an import reseller does not create a Japan PSN identity, and it does not rewrite the Japanese-only console language. You also inherit Japan Store pricing, Japan-facing support paths, and that 100 V power design. If you want Midnight Black aesthetics without those locks, look at global cover sets and accessories Sony already sells in Midnight Black — Portal and other peripherals are called out in the Japan blog as matching pieces — rather than importing a locked digital chassis for GTA VI week.

For players already on a Japan account in Japan, the pitch is simpler: same slim Digital guts, new black shell, optional matching drive, and a lower local MSRP than the US digital sticker. Recheck yen-to-dollar rates and your own PSN country setting before you treat the $347 headline as a deal you can personally use.
