Mid-Gen Feature Maturity: PSSR Defaults, Docked VRR Whitelists, and a Packed Pass Calendar

Coming Soon to Xbox Game Pass September–October 2026 wave graphic with Mad King, Dune, Gears E-Day and more

Mid-gen discourse loves motherboard leaks and studio org charts. The living-room calendar this week is quieter and more useful: platforms are finishing mid-gen feature promises while subscription tiles fill the same couch hours.

Three public threads landed in the same September window. Sony’s PlayStation 5 system software 26.06-14.00.00 (covered widely on Sept. 22) flips Enhance PSSR Image Quality to on-by-default for PS5 Pro owners. Nintendo’s Switch 2 system update 23.0.0 finally enables docked/TV Variable Refresh Rate—but Digital Foundry’s read is that it is whitelist-gated, with Welcome Tour as the early reference title. And Xbox’s dated Game Pass Wave 2 list keeps marching: Mad King Redemption joins Ultimate/Premium/PC today (Sept. 23), Black Ops 6 expands onto Premium on the 25th, Minecraft Dungeons II day-ones on the 29th, and Gears of War: E-Day follows on October 6.

PS5 Pro: the obscure toggle becomes the baseline

Enhanced PSSR (Sony’s upgraded PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution model, sometimes called PSSR 2.0 in the press) has existed since the spring. Until this week’s system update, Pro owners who wanted the newer neural reconstruction on games built around original PSSR had to dig into Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output → Enhance PSSR Image Quality.

Update 26.06-14.00.00 flips that switch on by default. Engadget and other wires are clear on the limits that matter for readers: it only helps games that already support PSSR, it does not sprinkle AI upscaling across the entire PS5 library, and not every “PS5 Pro Enhanced” badge uses PSSR at all. Players who prefer the original look can still disable the override. The same update also adds a voice-chat speaker indicator and Welcome Hub community widgets—social chrome around a graphics default that finally matches how most Pro owners will play.

Switch 2: docked VRR arrives as a per-title promise

Switch 2 launched with handheld VRR and a docked promise that slipped. Firmware 23.0.0 restores TV-mode VRR when both the software and the display support it, and it requires a dock firmware update (Settings → System → Update Dock). That is the good news.

The catch, per Digital Foundry’s early testing, is the whitelist. Unlike PS5’s more system-wide VRR approach, Switch 2 docked VRR appears to need per-title enablement. At first light, Nintendo’s own Welcome Tour (updated to 1.1.0) was the title that actually engaged it. The feature’s real mid-gen impact will be measured in how quickly first- and third-party patches opt in—not in the patch-note headline alone.

Game Pass: dated tiles are the other mid-gen language

Xbox Wire’s September Wave 2 list is the third pillar. It is not a rumor slide; it is a sequence of ship dates:

  • Sept. 22 — Dune: Awakening and day-one Well Dweller
  • Sept. 23 — Mad King Redemption (Ultimate, Premium, PC; Cloud/Handheld/Series/PC)
  • Sept. 25 — Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 expands onto Game Pass Premium
  • Sept. 29 — Minecraft Dungeons II day-one
  • Oct. 6 — Gears of War: E-Day day-one

Mad King Redemption’s Sept. 23 tile is the indie beat-’em-up/roguelite punctuation between heavier franchise weeks. GameRant notes it is the 11th new Game Pass arrival in September 2026 and sits ahead of Minecraft Dungeons II—while a separate leaving list still clears shelf space on Sept. 30. That is catalog gravity with a subscription frame: date the tile, name the tier, fight for the same evening.

Why “feature maturity” beats leak theater this week

Stack those threads and the mid-gen thesis writes itself. Sony is making a Pro graphics override the quiet default instead of a hidden menu tip. Nintendo is delivering docked VRR with developer homework attached. Xbox is filling October’s front half with dated Pass SKUs while firmware stories compete for attention. None of that requires inventing a next-box slide.

The practical read for console players is simple: update the PS5 Pro today if you have not, check Switch 2 dock firmware when 23.0.0 reaches your region and watch which games patch for TV VRR, and treat the Game Pass row from Mad King through Gears: E-Day as the habit calendar that will actually decide what gets played. Mid-gen maturity looks like toggles becoming defaults, whitelists waiting on patches, and subscription tiles that already have ship dates.
