Switch 2 owners can start Modern Warfare 4's campaign this Friday, Oct 16, a full week before launch, but only if they bought or pre-ordered a digital edition. That's the same rule Activision applies on every platform. It matters more on Switch 2, though, because the boxed copy you'll find in stores doesn't hold the game at all. Prices, store listings and Activision's pages in this guide were checked on Oct 12, 2026, at 9:45 a.m. PT.
The game arrives in three steps
Activision splits the launch into three dates, and the first two are early access perks for digital buyers. Its support page says anyone who pre-orders or pre-purchases "any digital edition" on any platform, Switch 2 included, gets the full campaign from Oct 16 and all of DMZ, the new extraction mode, from Tuesday, Oct 20. Multiplayer waits for everyone until the worldwide launch on Friday, Oct 23. Nintendo's UK listing adds that a digital purchase made any time before Oct 23 still counts, so you haven't missed the window if you're only deciding now.
| Date (PT) | What unlocks | Who gets it on Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Fri, Oct 16 | Full campaign | Digital Standard or Vault Edition, pre-ordered or bought by Oct 23 |
| Tue, Oct 20 | All of DMZ | Same digital buyers |
| Fri, Oct 23 | Full game, including multiplayer | Everyone, including boxed copies |
Activision hasn't published an unlock hour for any of these days on Switch 2, and its fine print says start dates can change and may differ by time zone. The US eShop already lists the game's release date as Oct 16, which lines up with campaign early access.
The box in the store is just a code
If you were planning to pick up a boxed Switch 2 copy, check what's inside first. GamingBolt reports that Video Games Plus, an independent North American retailer, found the Switch 2 Standard Edition is a code-in-box release, with no cartridge and no game-key card, and the shop says it won't carry it. Activision's own editions page only describes physical editions for Xbox Series X and PS5, and it ties both early access windows to digital purchases. It doesn't say whether redeeming a boxed Switch 2 code before Oct 16 counts. Until it does, the eShop is the only route Activision clearly covers for playing on Friday.
| Switch 2 version | US price | Early access | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition (eShop) | $69.99 | Campaign Oct 16, DMZ Oct 20 | Can upgrade to Vault later for $30 |
| Vault Edition (eShop) | $99.99 | Campaign Oct 16, DMZ Oct 20 | Adds two operator packs, five weapon blueprints and one season of BlackCell |
| Boxed Standard Edition | Varies by retailer | Not confirmed by Activision | Download code only, per GamingBolt; Activision says physical editions can't be upgraded to Vault |
UK buyers will see £69.99 and £99.99 for the same two eShop editions, according to Nintendo Insider.
Make room before Friday
Nintendo's eShop gives the Standard Edition an estimated size of 84.9GB, and Nintendo Life first spotted that figure back in August, when the open beta needed 38.7GB. Nothing else in Nintendo Everything's Oct 11 file size roundup comes close; Resident Evil 4 is next at 29GB. The Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage, and Nintendo notes that part of it is reserved for the system, so this one download can take roughly a third of a fresh console. Nintendo's UK listing also warns that mandatory updates may need extra space. If your console is already full, archive a few games now rather than on Friday night, or plan on a microSD Express card.
You'll need a connection for most of it, too. Activision says the game streams textures in every mode to keep the install smaller, which means a continuous internet connection for multiplayer and DMZ. Online modes on Switch 2 also need a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, and Activision warns that a mobile number linked to your Activision account may be required.
The Switch 2 version is built natively by Infinity Ward with Digital Legends. Activision lists Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, gyro aiming, Pro Controller support, HDR and handheld play, plus cross-play and cross-progression with other platforms. One thing it doesn't list for Switch 2 is split-screen, which Activision's FAQ names only for Xbox Series X|S and PS5.
If you want to play the campaign this week, buy it on the eShop and clear about 85GB before Friday. If you're happy waiting for Oct 23, the boxed code saves you nothing in storage, so the choice comes down to price and whether you care about the early start.
