September 22, 2026 is a reset-and-unlock Tuesday: Xbox confirms the next phase of its studio overhaul with Halo moving under Activision, PS5 Digital Deluxe owners get Control Resonant early access at 7:00 AM PT, and Dune: Awakening finally arrives on Xbox and Game Pass.
Xbox: Halo to Activision, 268 cuts, studio map redrawn
Xbox COO Matt Booty’s Tuesday memo makes the mid-year restructuring concrete for console fans watching the first-party slate. Xbox is eliminating 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and the Xbox Game Studios management / central functions layer — bringing the company to “roughly three-quarters” of the restructuring announced earlier this year.
The headline for the living-room crowd: Activision will develop the next Halo title with a new, purpose-built team that is separate from Call of Duty. A small Halo Studios group stays to support the community and games already in-market. Activision also expands its remit to World’s Edge (Age of Empires) and Rare (Sea of Thieves). Elsewhere in the shuffle, Obsidian rolls under Bethesda (current work including Grounded and a new Fallout collaboration continues), King absorbs Microsoft Casual Games, and Turn 10 merges with Playground into one studio focused on Forza and Fable.
Divestiture update: Undead Labs has transitioned independently and still plans State of Decay 3 day one on Game Pass with a new publisher. Ninja Theory is in consultation on a proposed closure after two handoff deals fell through; Arkane consultation continues through year-end. Activision president Rob Kostich framed the Halo brief as making “the greatest Halo game ever” while staying true to what players loved — bold PR for a franchise that just changed houses.
Control Resonant: PS5 Digital Deluxe early access is live
Remedy’s Control Resonant still launches worldwide on September 24 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC — but the two-day head start is real today. PS5 players who bought the Digital Deluxe Edition ($69.99 US) unlock at 7:00 AM PT / 10:00 AM ET on September 22. That early-access window is PS5-only; Xbox and PC Digital Deluxe buyers wait for the September 24 simultaneous launch alongside Standard Edition ($59.99). Preloads have been live ahead of the gate, so if you paid for the Deluxe perk, today’s the day the Oldest House sequel actually boots.
Dune: Awakening hits Xbox and Game Pass
Funcom’s open-world Arrakis survival MMO arrives on Xbox today as an Xbox Play Anywhere title and lands on Game Pass (console, PC, and Cloud), with handheld-optimized support called out for Ally-class devices. Xbox Wire’s June briefing positioned the September 22 console build as the definitive version — full Book One story, single-player mode, Performance/Quality targets (Performance aimed at 60 FPS), and the year of PC content updates baked in. Standard list price was $49.99; Deluxe/Ultimate pre-orders had a five-day head start from September 17, so day-one Game Pass players are joining an Arrakis that already had a short premium runway.
What to watch
Near-term stack is dense: finish the Control Resonant Deluxe window before the September 24 multiplat unlock (and Silent Hill: Townfall the same day), keep an eye on how Activision staffs the purpose-built Halo team versus live Halo support, and see whether Dune’s Game Pass surge changes the desert meta this week. October 6 is Xbox’s next all-hands town hall for the roadmap after today’s cuts.
