Review Roundup: FC 27’s 78 Split — The Grounds vs Career Mode vs Another $70

EA Sports FC 27 hit storefronts yesterday across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC, and the first full day of public scores paints a clearer picture than the usual annual shrug. Metacritic’s PS5 tally sits at 77 from 37 critic reviews, OpenCritic’s Top Critic Average is tracking around 80 with roughly three-quarters of outlets recommending the game, and the argument is less “is it broken?” than “do The Grounds and a Career Mode rebuild justify another seventy dollars when Ultimate Team barely moved?”

Our NGC Rating averages 12 published critic scores we could verify and normalize to a 100-point scale. Unscored verdict bands (GamingBolt and Dexerto both land on “Great” without a number) and unfinished regional IGN write-ups are left out. The sample stretches from Destructoid’s 9/10 and Completexbox’s 90% down to Radio Times’ 1/5, so the average sits a touch under OpenCritic and almost exactly on Metacritic: 78, Good.

Scores behind the NGC Rating
Outlet Published Score Normalized bar
Destructoid 9/10 90
Completexbox 90% 90
SpazioGames 88 88
The Games Machine 8.6/10 86
DualShockers 8.5/10 85
But Why Tho? 8.5/10 85
COGconnected 85 85
VGC 4/5 80
Nintendo Life 8/10 80
TheSixthAxis 8/10 80
Game Informer 7.25/10 73
Radio Times 1/5 20

Excluded: GamingBolt and Dexerto (Great band only, no numeric score on the review page); main English IGN (in-progress / regional scores only at collection time). Radio Times 1/5 is included as a published numeric grade, not an estimate.

EA Sports FC 27 — The Grounds splits critics, Career Mode carries the upgrade case

Across the reviews that go beyond a score dump, the on-pitch changes are the easy agreement. Destructoid’s 9/10 frames FC 27 as a game of skill again after years of AI-assisted defending, praising nerfed CPU jockeying, better curved runs, and a Career Mode that finally treats transfers as multi-stage sagas. But Why Tho? lands at 8.5/10 for the same rebuilt defense and TransferRoom-backed Expected Transfer Value system, arguing this is the strongest FC since the FIFA name left. VGC’s Chris Scullion awards 4/5 and puts The Grounds at the centre of why this year feels like more than a roster update: an open-world social hub with Rush, small-sided parks, Clubs integration, and Alex Hunter as host, even while admitting pre-release lobbies were sparse.

That hub is also where the temperature drops. Game Informer’s 7.25/10 calls The Grounds “not a destination mode,” closer to a sweat farm for Season points than NBA 2K’s City, and says the welcome Ultimate Team Gallery tweaks still leave a strong sense of familiarity. TheSixthAxis echoes the “slight improvement, not a major evolution” line at 8/10, while Dexerto (unscored for our meter) and several mid-band reviews describe The Grounds as stuck between a real mode and a fancy Clubs lobby. Radio Times goes further with a 1/5, calling The Grounds a dull City knock-off and arguing the £139.99 Ultimate Plus Edition and unchanged monetisation make the annual buy indefensible. That single grade pulls our average down and is why 78 sits below the warmer OpenCritic cluster: the critic fight is about whether a social hub and Career Mode rebuild can outweigh a FUT year that barely moved.

Platform notes matter more this year than most annual reviews admit. Nintendo Life’s 8/10 is frank that Switch 2 runs at 30fps and that The Grounds may struggle to keep a healthy online population on Nintendo hardware, while still calling it the best football option on the console. EA’s own editions FAQ confirms The Grounds (including Clubs) is current-gen and PC only: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Last-gen PS4 and Xbox One owners get the core game and can free-upgrade later, but they do not get the headline mode. Completexbox’s 90% Xbox Series review is warmer on that social layer and on Career Mode’s Dynamic OVR, which is a useful counterweight to the Switch 2 caution.

Editions, platforms, and who should buy now

Individual reviews describe The Grounds and Career Mode well, but they rarely put the storefront math next to the critic split. Stacking EA’s official edition notes with the scoreboard gives a clearer buyer map for the first weekend after launch:

Reference Score / note
NGC Rating (12 verified scores) 78
Metacritic (37 critic reviews, Sep 26) 77
OpenCritic Top Critic Average 80
Critics recommend (OpenCritic) ~77%
Standard list price (US) $69.99

Ultimate / Ultimate Plus early access From Sep 18, 2026 (up to 7 days)
FC 27 Lite (free Kick-Off preview) Available at launch on major storefronts
The Grounds platforms PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, Switch 2 only
Switch 2 performance (Nintendo Life) 30fps; best football option on the platform with that caveat

Player type Buy-now call Why
Career Mode managers who bounced off recent FC transfer windows Buy Standard (or try Lite first) Destructoid, DualShockers, But Why Tho?, Completexbox, and Dexerto-style write-ups agree the multi-stage transfers and Dynamic OVR are the clearest single-player upgrade in years.
Clubs / social / Rush players on current-gen or PC Buy if you have friends online The Grounds is the headline; VGC and Completexbox see real potential, while Game Informer and TheSixthAxis say it still needs post-launch content.
Ultimate Team grinders chasing a new meta Wait or stick with FC 26 a bit longer Multiple reviews call FUT’s year light (Gallery and streamlined SBCs only). Paying $100+ for Ultimate/Ultimate Plus is mostly coins and early access, not a new mode.
Switch 2 owners Buy if you want the best football game on the system Nintendo Life’s 8/10 endorses the pitch, with an explicit 30fps and online-population caveat for The Grounds.
PS4 / Xbox One players Know what you are missing EA confirms The Grounds and Clubs live only on PS5, Series, PC, and Switch 2. Last-gen still gets the core modes and a free generation upgrade later.
Anyone burned by monetisation Start with FC 27 Lite Radio Times’ 1/5 is an outlier on score but not alone on Ultimate Plus pricing complaints; Lite’s Kick-Off slice is the low-friction way to test pitch feel before spending.
Edition and platform limits from EA’s official FAQ; buy calls are ours from the critic split, not hands-on testing.

That pairing points to a weekend decision rather than a panic buy. If Career Mode or Clubs is why you still open FC every September, the reviews mostly support jumping to 27 on Standard, especially with Lite available as a free pitch check. If you mainly live in Ultimate Team and already feel nickeled by Season Passes, the scoreboard does not scream that this is the year the grind changed. Either way, this is not a thin score list: the critic fight is about whether EA finally spent a year on the modes around FUT, and whether The Grounds grows into a pillar or joins Volta on the shelf of abandoned experiments.
