Review Roundup: Gears of War: E-Day — Campaign Hits 90, Multiplayer Still Blank

The review embargo for Gears of War: E-Day lifted on October 1, and the first wave is almost entirely about the campaign. Across sixteen verified numeric critic scores, our NGC Rating lands at 90 — Must-play territory — while OpenCritic sat near 87 and Metacritic’s Xbox Series X page hovered in the high 80s as more outlets filed. That is a clear step above Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 (both 84 on Metacritic) and the best Coalition-era reception so far, though it still trails Epic’s original trilogy. The catch every buyer needs to hear first: Versus and Horde Siege were locked for most review builds, so today’s board is a campaign score with a multiplayer blank still waiting to be filled.

That 90 is the plain average of the sixteen numeric scores below, not a Metacritic or OpenCritic scrape. Provisional or unscored campaign pieces from IGN, GameSpot, Eurogamer, Game Informer, Polygon, PC Gamer, and GamesRadar+ sit outside the math.

Scores behind the NGC Rating

VGC 4/5 80

Saudi Gamer 4/5 80
Gaming Instincts 8/10 80
Wccftech 7.4/10 74

Excluded: IGN and GameSpot (campaign review-in-progress, no final numeric badge on page at collection); Eurogamer, Game Informer, Polygon, PC Gamer, GamesRadar+, Gamer Social Club, Console Creatures (unscored). Nearly all included scores are campaign-only.

I read the full reviews from Pure Xbox, VGC, ScreenRant, Wccftech, But Why Tho?, The Outerhaven, DayOne, and Generación Xbox, plus the campaign notes cited in Polygon’s and TheGamer’s roundups. The high cluster treats Kalona’s invasion as a franchise peak: crunchier gunplay, welcome jump/slide mobility, weapon mods, and a darker Locust tone that recalls the original trilogy. The lower and mixed voices mostly agree the shooting still works, then argue the prequel story leans on action-movie clichés, open-city stretches slow the pace, or the campaign feels like a step back from Gears 5’s character focus.

Where critics actually agree — and where they split

Pure Xbox, DayOne, Generación Xbox, and The Outerhaven sit at the ceiling with perfect marks, calling the campaign one of the best Gears entries in years and, in a few cases, among Xbox’s strongest exclusives this generation. TechRaptor, But Why Tho?, MondoXbox, ScreenRant, PPE.pl, and Sirus Gaming land in the 90–95 band with the same core praise: Emergence Day finally feels frightening again, Bravo Squad (Marcus, Dom, Mags, Lucas) carries the emotional load, and the combat loop is the most fluid the series has felt.

VGC’s 4/5 and the mid-80 cluster still recommend the campaign for gunplay and spectacle, but Chris Scullion’s review is blunt about thin Marcus–Dom payoff until late and a one-trick action rhythm across five acts. Wccftech’s 7.4 is the clearest dissenting scored take on our board: Alessio Palumbo argues the narrative and side content step back from Gears 5, with PC traversal stuttering in UE5 open stretches, even while calling the cover shooting better than ever. Polygon’s unscored piece and PC Gamer’s impressions push in a similar direction — intense, then exhausting — which is why a 90 average can coexist with real buyer hesitation if story novelty or open-zone pacing matter more to you than Lancer feel.

Campaign-only scores, platforms, and performance

Detail What critics and listings say
Platforms Xbox Series X|S and PC (Xbox Play Anywhere); Xbox console exclusive at launch
Price $69.99 USD standard listing on Steam / Xbox Store
Early access October 1, 2026 for Premium / early-access SKUs
Full launch October 6, 2026, including Game Pass day one
Campaign length Roughly 11–16 hours depending on difficulty and side content (DayOne co-op ~11h; Pure Xbox ~16h Hardcore; Generación Xbox ~12h)
Review scope Campaign and co-op for most outlets; Versus / Horde Siege locked until early access for the majority
Series X modes Pure Xbox: Quality looks exceptional at 30fps; Performance holds 60fps with a softer image; split-screen capped at two players / 30fps
PC note Outerhaven reports locked 60fps at 4K Ludicrous + RT with DLSS Performance on high-end hardware; Wccftech flags UE5 traversal stutter in open maps
Sources: Steam / Xbox Store pricing and dates; length and modes from Pure Xbox, DayOne, Generación Xbox, Outerhaven, and Wccftech reviews (Oct 1, 2026 PT).

That platform table is the second thing individual reviews rarely put in one place. Early access is already live for Premium buyers, Game Pass arrives with the October 6 launch, and the review board you see today will almost certainly move once Horde Siege and Versus get full scored write-ups. DayOne is an outlier in mentioning multiplayer positively in the same piece; most 90-plus scores on our table are still campaign verdicts wearing a full-game price tag.

How it sits next to the rest of Gears

Game Metacritic (series context) What today’s E-Day board implies
Gears of War (2006) 94 Still the critical ceiling; E-Day is not matching Epic’s debut
Gears of War 2 / 3 93 / 91 Original trilogy remains ahead on aggregates
Gears of War 4 / Gears 5 84 / 84 E-Day’s campaign wave clears Coalition’s prior mainline scores
Gears of War: E-Day (campaign wave) ~87–89 MC / 87 OC / NGC 90 Best Coalition reception yet; multiplayer could still pull the average
Franchise Metacritic context from TheGamer / Insider Gaming roundups; E-Day NGC from sixteen scores collected Oct 1, 2026 PT.

Who should buy now vs wait

Player type Verdict Why
Campaign-first Gears fans Buy / start early access High scorers treat Kalona, combat, and Marcus–Dom material as a series highlight
Game Pass subscribers Wait for Oct 6 Same day-one library access without the Premium upcharge; scores already strong enough to plan around
Horde / Versus mains Wait for scored multiplayer Most critics could not finalize Versus or Horde Siege; aggregates may shift
Story-first / open-zone skeptics Read VGC and Wccftech first Repetition, thin Marcus–Dom payoff, and forgettable side content are the recurring caveats
PC ultra settings players Check performance notes Looks exceptional on high-end hardware; Wccftech’s stutter report is the clear PC caution
Buyer matrix synthesized from scored reviews and store timing collected October 1, 2026 (PT).

The plain read from today’s board is that Gears of War: E-Day’s campaign is reviewing like the Coalition course correction Xbox needed, with a critic consensus around combat and Kalona that is unusually tight for a cover shooter in 2026. If you are here for Marcus, Dom, and a 12-hour invasion story, the scores already answer the buy question. If you are here for ranked Versus or a season of Horde Siege, treat 90 as a campaign preview average and check back once those modes have been through the same scored gauntlet.
