Nintendo says it won't ditch physical Switch 2 games

Nintendo has no plans to ditch physical games, Latin America VP and general manager Bill van Zyll said in an interview with Coelho that outlets including Nintendo Everything, VGChartz, and My Nintendo News reported on Oct 11, 2026. The line lands while PlayStation is already on a fixed clock to stop new disc production. Quotes and platform contrast were rechecked Oct 11, 2026, at 3:25 p.m. PT.

Van Zyll framed Nintendo as format-agnostic: the company follows what players prefer, Switch 2 still ships with digital and physical capability a little over a year in, and fans clearly still care about carts. That is a policy stance for now — not a forever guarantee — but it is clearer than silence while the industry digests Sony's 2028 move.

Nintendo carts vs PlayStation's disc sunset

Nintendo (Switch 2 today) PlayStation (new releases)
Physical path Full game cards and game-key cards Discs for titles shipping before the cutoff
Stated plan "No plans to ditch physical" (van Zyll / Coelho) New disc production ends January 2028 (PlayStation Blog, July 1, 2026)
After the change Still sells physical SKUs in both cart forms New games digital-only on PlayStation Store and at retailers (codes / digital formats)
Already-shipped discs / carts Still play on hardware that supports them Pre-2028 discs unaffected per Sony

Sony's blog is explicit: games already out, or releasing on disc before January 2028, keep those discs; the cut is for new PlayStation console releases after that date. Nintendo's comment does not invent a matching sunset date.

Full cart, game-key card, and who feels it

Switch 2 physical is not one product. A full cartridge holds the game on the card. A game-key card is a license key in a plastic shell: insert it, download the title, and you generally need the card present to play. First-party Nintendo releases have mostly been proper carts; third-party and some published titles lean on game-key cards. My Nintendo News and related coverage identify Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition as a game-key card Switch 2 physical — useful as a concrete example of how "physical" can still mean a download plus a key card.

Who is affected

  • Collectors who want ROM-on-cart ownership still have a Nintendo path, but should read the box for game-key card labeling before treating every plastic case as archive-complete.
  • Retailers keep a Nintendo shelf strategy while PlayStation's new-release disc pipeline winds down toward 2028.
  • Switch 2 owners who prefer borrowing, resale, or offline installs should prefer full carts when the option exists; game-key cards behave closer to a digital purchase with a plastic dongle.

Van Zyll's comments do not promise every future Nintendo title will ship as a full cart, and they do not answer long-term next-hardware questions. They do put Nintendo on record, today, against walking away from physical while a major rival has already published its end date for new discs.
