Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2 just got the multiplayer piece a lot of owners said was missing at launch. Version 1.2.0 is live as a free update, per Nintendo’s September 30 news post and the full support notes republished by Nintendo Life. Battle Mode doubles from three stages to six, four players can share one console again, and a long list of campaign freezes and online lobby quirks finally get patched.
What follows is not a reprint of the patch-notes dump. It is an owner guide built from Nintendo’s own wording: what changed between day-one Battle Mode and today, which fixes are worth a reinstall priority, and who should buy in now versus who can keep waiting.
Launch gap vs Version 1.2.0

At launch, Battle Mode shipped with three stages and online play, but local four-player split-screen was absent. That gap showed up immediately in reviews and forums, because the N64 original and later ports treated couch dogfights as part of the package. Nintendo’s Direct preview already telegraphed today’s stages and split-screen, and 1.2.0 delivers both.
| Battle Mode feature | At Switch 2 launch | After Version 1.2.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Stage count | 3 stages | 6 stages (adds Katina, Sector X, Venom) |
| Local split-screen | Not available for four players | Up to four players on one Switch 2 |
| Online with a local party | Not called out as a local-team path | Local split-screen party can join random online matches as a team |
| New mid-match items | Launch item set | Additional items appear during battles |
| Online lobby after host leaves | Lobby could break up | Lobby stays up after the host leaves |
Nintendo also says the three new stages will appear more often in online battles for a limited time, which is a practical nudge if you want to sample Katina, Sector X, and Venom before the rotation settles.
What the patch notes fix that players will feel

The support page is long. Most lines are niche freezes. A few matter for almost anyone still clearing Campaign, chasing Challenge Mode medals, or hopping into Online Battle.
| Area | Player-facing change in 1.2.0 | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign / Challenge | Clearer damage feedback on certain bosses; Bolse Core weak-point color adjusted | Hits that used to feel muted are easier to read |
| Campaign / Challenge | Freezes tied to Bacoon, Gorgon, Goras, Venom resume, and Corneria RESTART loops addressed | Removes soft-locks that wasted runs after a kill or restart |
| Sector X challenge | “Find the hidden power-up” can complete even if you take the wing-repair item | Removes a confusing fail state on a secret-route challenge |
| Online Battle | Crash on match start and host-disconnect progression stalls fixed | Fewer abandoned lobbies |
| Online Battle | Score calculation error around the 1200-point mark corrected | High-scoring matches stop quietly losing ~1000 points |
| GameChat / cameras | USB camera feed can show on the full-screen match view when you shoot someone down; third-party camera quirks addressed | Optional, and Nintendo still recommends the official Switch 2 Camera if a third-party unit fails |
Separately, Nintendo Life notes that the Star Fox soundtrack is now on the Nintendo Music app: 62 tracks, about 2 hours and 17 minutes, with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription required. That is not part of the game download, but it is part of today’s Star Fox package for subscribers.
Owner verdict
| Your situation | What 1.2.0 changes | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Already own Star Fox on Switch 2 | Free content plus stability work | Install today; start with the new stages and a four-player local session if you have controllers |
| Wanted it for couch multiplayer and waited | Four-player split-screen and local-to-online team path are live | The launch objection that held you back is gone; buy if Battle Mode was the blocker |
| Mostly solo Campaign / Challenge | Boss readability and freeze fixes | Worth the update, but not a reason by itself to buy if the remaster did not click |
| Online-only player with a quiet lobby | New stages rotated more often for a limited time; lobby and score fixes | Good week to jump back in while Katina, Sector X, and Venom are featured |
One controller note from Nintendo’s patch text: each local player needs a controller, and Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con can be used in solo horizontal grip during split-screen. If you are planning a four-person session, count pads before you promise the living room a rematch.
Version 1.2.0 does not reinvent Star Fox. It closes the multiplayer gap that defined the launch conversation and cleans up the soft-locks that made Challenge Mode and late Campaign retries annoying. For owners, that is a clear download. For fence-sitters who specifically wanted four Arwings on one TV, today is the first time the Switch 2 edition matches the expectation they brought from 1997.
