Call of Duty: Warzone's move into Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 ends native play on PS4 and Xbox One. For anyone moving to another console, the important preparation is checking which Activision account holds your progress before setting up the replacement.
The change comes alongside Warzone's announced free-to-play debut on Switch 2. That gives Nintendo owners another way into the game, but it doesn't make every purchase or currency balance portable. Treat access, progress and spending as three separate checks.
Activision's Season 1 announcement ties the older consoles' cutoff to the new season and says progression carries to supported platforms through the same linked Activision account. If you're coming back after a break, don't rush through setup by creating another account simply because it seems quicker.
Before downloading on different hardware, identify the account you previously used and check its linked platform accounts. That's a more useful first step than buying another bundle in an attempt to restore missing items. If something looks wrong after sign-in, investigate the account connection before spending money.
Check your points separately
The publisher's platform-transition FAQ distinguishes content bought with COD Points from the points themselves. Eligible content bought with points follows the linked account to supported platforms. Unspent points remain tied to the platform account, with access on a newer console in the same family.
That distinction matters if you're weighing a PS5 against Switch 2, or moving away from Xbox altogether. A progress-transfer promise isn't a promise that an old wallet will appear wherever you next sign in.
Activision's COD Points guide also warns that purchases made with real money have platform restrictions. Check the specific content you care about rather than assuming the entire store history moves as one package.
For a new Switch 2 player, start by looking for Warzone itself. It's announced as free to play, separately from the paid Modern Warfare 4 release, a distinction also covered in The Click's launch guide. You shouldn't choose a paid edition merely because you're looking for the free game.
For returning players, the practical order is simple: confirm your existing account, check which purchases and points will be available on the destination platform, then install. Make the hardware decision with those limits understood rather than discovering them after checkout.
